Gluten Free Items

Hey guys! As you may know, this is usually the blog that I use to post my photography, but today I'm going to do something a little different. About six months ago, I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease, which is an autoimmune disorder affecting the villi in the small intestine. The only treatment for this disease is a lifelong adherence to a strict gluten-free diet. If you would like to know more about the disease, what it is and how it may affect you if you've been diagnosed please click here

I made this post for anyone that might have just found out that they have Celiac Disease. I want to let you know that you can do this and that even though it is hard, you have my support and millions of others support as well. I know how hard it is to be newly diagnosed and to feel so very lost in the grocery store; walking down countless aisles that you cannot eat anything in. I would like to help you. I have made a list of a bunch of goodies that are completely safe for you to eat, so that you won't have to worry about this while you are shopping. I wish so much that I could have accessed this information when I was first diagnosed. The good news is, there are TONS of things that you can still eat!

Most grocery stores offer special gluten-free items, but if you life in a small town like me, I know how difficult this can be. I have made a list of streamline gluten free products that can be found almost anywhere and without the high prices of gluten-free specialty foods.

Gluten Free Item List:
(Please be sure to check labels on all items because they are subject to change)

Meats:
Meats are all naturally gluten free
Be sure to check for meats that have added seasonings or turkeys/hams that may have been injected with flavor as these seasonings may contain gluten. Stick to plain meats and add your own seasonings to be safe.

Dairy:
-All milk is safe. Be careful with flavored milk such as chocolate/strawberry, check the labels on these.
-Eggs/Cheese are safe.
-Yoplait Yogurt is gluten-free. Avoid granola. (check the containers for a gluten free label)
-Sour cream, butter, etc. are safe

Condiments that are gluten free:
-Heinz ketchup
-A1 Steak sauce
-Ken's dressings (look for gluten-free written on the back of the bottle)
-Hidden Valley ranch and packets

(there are more, will update as I think of them)

Gluten free cereals:
cocoa pebbles-post brand or malt o' meal brand. I recommend malt o' meal because it is cheaper and tastes soooo much better!
fruity pebbles-post brand or malt o' meal brand

Gluten Free Specialty Products:
Things you should avoid at all costs:
-Pastas
-Breads
-Crackers
-Gravy :(
-Flour
-Anything fried with flour

Gluten free bread:
There are a lot of gluten-free breads. Right now I have been eating
Udi's Hamburger Buns and breads. Not gonna lie, it's expensive and not that great.

Pastas:
Barilla has gluten free pasta and you won't be able to taste a difference! I definately recommend this brand. Just make sure you pick up the box that says gluten free!

McCormick has an amazing gluten free gravy packet that you can find at wal-mart!

Walmart, food lion, etc. carry gluten free flours such as Betty Crockers Rice Flour, and King Arthur all purpose flour. Both are great!

Etc:

Most of Zatarain's rice is gluten free. It will be written on the box, so please check.

Old El Paso Salsa is gluten free, and you can pick up a bag of Santitas chips (also gluten free) to go with it!

As you know, sweets can be quite difficult if you have Celiac. I avoided the cake aisle for a long time after being diagnosed, but there are a few options out there.

Betty Crocker makes gluten-free cake mix, cookie, pie, and brownie mix! Be sure to try these! The brownies are phenomenal! (although a little pricey)
If money is tight, there are several ways to make gluten-free flourless brownies! I will be posting recipes later for these things so be on the lookout!

Now, for the fun part....JUNK FOOD! and believe me! There is LOTS OF IT that is safe!
